The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?
Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever a thread keeping it intact from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the management had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.
Lazio were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their first five games, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to determine if they are improving or imploding.
Matteo's Unexpected Presence
One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.
He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Uncovering His True Position
Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
