The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
